Veteran Sri Lankan cyclist A.M. Sumanaweera, one of the most respected figures in the island’s cycling community, has passed away. Hailing from Ratnapura, Sumanaweera was affectionately known as the “Little Gem of Ratnapura”, a title reflecting both his athletic brilliance and his hometown’s famed gem industry.
With a career spanning decades, Sumanaweera amassed over 1,000 cycling victories, including top finishes in prestigious national competitions such as the Lanka Savariya and the Lak Pohara Paadi Savariya. He was especially renowned for his exceptional ability in mountain climbing events, earning admiration across the cycling fraternity.
In addition to his sporting achievements, Sumanaweera also stood out for his extraordinary commitment to fitness and discipline. Despite working for the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, he famously cycled daily from Ratnapura to Kolonnawa for work—a testament to his passion and endurance.
His death marks a significant loss to Sri Lankan sports, especially for the cycling community who regarded him as an icon of perseverance and humility.
