Cricket Shocker: Leadership Shakeups in New Zealand and Pakistan!

Two major leadership announcements hit the cricket world on October 2, 2024! Tim Southee, New Zealand’s legendary fast bowler, has stepped down as the Test captain, passing the baton to Tom Latham, while Babar Azam has officially resigned as Pakistan’s white-ball captain after only six months in the role.

Southee Quits as New Zealand Test Captain
After a tough series defeat against Sri Lanka, Tim Southee has decided to relinquish his role as Test captain. His decision follows New Zealand’s recent 2-0 defeat, adding to their struggles in the format.

In a press statement, Southee expressed that his form has dipped, and stepping down would help him regain his peak performance. Tom Latham will now take over the reins, leading the Kiwis into their next challenge against India starting October 16 in Bangalore.

Latham, no stranger to leadership, has captained the side before and will bring a fresh perspective as New Zealand looks to bounce back from recent losses.

Babar Azam Steps Down as Pakistan’s White-Ball Captain
Meanwhile, in Pakistan, Babar Azam announced his decision to step down from the white-ball captaincy, just six months after being reappointed.

The prolific batsman cited a heavy workload and a desire to focus on his performance and personal growth. Babar’s tenure saw some highs, but Pakistan’s recent results, including their failure to reach the semi-finals in the World Cup, led to his decision.

Babar led Pakistan in 43 ODIs, with 26 wins, and captained 85 T20s, winning 48. Now, he steps down to focus on his own game, leaving Pakistan’s leadership once again in transition.

  • Tim Southee’s Record as Captain: 6 wins, 6 losses, 2 draws from 14 tests.
  • Babar Azam’s White-Ball Leadership: 43 ODIs (26 wins, 15 losses), 85 T20s (48 wins, 29 losses).
  • Upcoming Matches: New Zealand’s test series against India starting October 16, 2024.
