Crash and Fuel Spill Shut Down Trans-Canada Highway Near Chemainus for Hours

The Trans-Canada Highway near Chemainus was closed in both directions for several hours on Friday following a major collision involving a semitrailer.

According to RCMP reports, the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. near Henry Road when a transport truck struck a concrete barrier separating the north and southbound lanes. The impact punctured the truck’s diesel fuel tanks, causing a significant spill that spread across both lanes of the highway.

A secondary collision involving another vehicle also took place as a result of the initial crash. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene, implementing spill containment measures to prevent further environmental damage.

DriveBC reported that northbound traffic was diverted at Fuller Lake Road, while southbound vehicles were rerouted via Henry Road. The highway remained closed for several hours as cleanup crews worked to remove debris and control the fuel leak.

All lanes were reopened shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday. B.C. Emergency Health Services confirmed that one ambulance attended the scene but no individuals required hospital treatment.

The incident caused significant delays along the busy highway, highlighting the importance of safety and quick response measures in major transport routes.
