The Constitutional Council will meet this afternoon to review the nomination of Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya as the country’s next police chief, following a recommendation by the President.
The Council previously convened on August 7 to discuss the appointment but was unable to reach a final decision.
The post became vacant after former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon was removed by the President, a move supported by a parliamentary motion endorsing his dismissal.
Ahead of today’s session, the Constitutional Council has sought comprehensive reports on Weerasuriya from several key bodies, including the judiciary, the National Police Commission, and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
