Colombo Set to Host IRONMAN® 70.3, Boosting Tourism and Global Recognition
A media briefing held on 11th February 2026 evening formally announced that Colombo will host the prestigious IRONMAN® 70.3 triathlon, under the patronage of Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar. The event marks the return of the city to the global IRONMAN® calendar, highlighting Colombo as a destination for world-class sporting events while promoting tourism, investment, and city branding.
The competition is expected to attract nearly 1,000 athletes from more than 45 countries, positioning Colombo alongside other renowned international IRONMAN® host cities. Organizers highlighted the economic benefits, noting that such events draw high-value tourism, increase hotel and hospitality revenue, and generate significant attention for Sri Lanka on a global stage.
In addition to the sporting spectacle, the event will serve as a catalyst for the #ActiveColombo initiative, which aims to transform Colombo into South Asia’s leading “Active City.” The initiative envisions a city where sports, public health, tourism, and urban life intersect, fostering a healthier and more vibrant urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
