China’s Space Tourism Soars: Inside Hainan’s Rocketing Industry

Hainan, dubbed ‘China’s Hawaii’, is witnessing a tourism surge, propelled not just by its tropical allure but also by its burgeoning space industry centered in Wenchang, akin to Florida’s Cape Canaveral.

Hainan, often likened to Hawaii due to its scenic beaches and balmy climate, is experiencing a tourism boom, thanks in part to its burgeoning space industry. Wenchang, home to a rocket launch center, is attracting visitors eager to witness space missions firsthand. CNN’s recent visit to Wenchang shed light on the city’s growing appeal, especially ahead of the Chang’e-6 probe launch, scheduled for May 3, aimed at exploring the far side of the moon. The Hilton Wenchang, transformed into a space-themed haven, offers guests a celestial experience, complete with aerospace-inspired afternoon tea. The hotel gift shop is stocked with space memorabilia, catering to enthusiasts of all ages. Rocket-themed décor adorns the city, while hotels report skyrocketing room rates during launch events. With over 50 hotels now dotting the city, Wenchang has seen a staggering influx of 1.5 million tourists in the past two years. The space program has not only bolstered tourism but also evoked a sense of national pride, evident in the enthusiasm of locals like photographer Yan Zehua, who captures the magic of each launch. Families flock to Wenchang, hoping to ignite their children’s interest in science and technology. Beyond space, Hainan aims to diversify its attractions, with plans for a Hello Kitty-themed resort and visa-free access for tourists from over 50 countries, positioning itself as a premier destination for travelers seeking both earthly and extraterrestrial adventures.
