Children Hospitalised After Suspected Poisoning at Ice-Skating Rink

A chilling incident at an ice-skating rink in Adelaide’s west has left sixteen children hospitalized due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Here’s what we know so far about the alarming situation.

A concerning incident unfolded at an ice-skating rink in Adelaide’s west, resulting in the hospitalization of sixteen children due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

SA Health confirmed that in the early hours of Sunday, a group of children was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after exhibiting symptoms of high levels of carbon monoxide poisoning. According to a spokeswoman, most patients are under observation, with some requiring oxygen therapy. Fortunately, all are reported to be in stable condition and expected to fully recover.

The Metropolitan Fire Service responded to a call from the RAH around 3 am and arrived at the Ice Arena on James Congdon Drive in Thebarton. They conducted tests for harmful gases, suspecting carbon monoxide poisoning. A spokesman for the Fire Service indicated that they are investigating two pieces of machinery, a dehumidifier, and an ice resurfacer, as potential sources of the poisonings. These machines have been isolated, and further testing is underway to confirm their involvement.

Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention for anyone experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. She particularly advised pregnant women and young infants to undergo checks, regardless of whether they exhibit symptoms.
