Celebrating Buddha Day 2024: A Message from Peter Dutton

Warm Wishes to Australia’s Buddhist Community

On behalf of the Coalition, the Hon Peter Dutton MP extends his heartfelt greetings to Australians of the Buddhist faith as they celebrate Buddha Day 2024. Known by various names such as Vesak, Buddha Jayanti, and Buddha Purnima, this sacred day commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha.

Buddha’s journey began as Prince Siddhartha Gautama, living a life of luxury. However, upon witnessing the realities of illness, old age, and death, he embarked on a quest for a deeper understanding of life. His profound journey led to enlightenment under the bodhi tree, where he realized the Four Noble Truths, becoming the Buddha, the “Awakened One.”

Buddha’s teachings emphasize compassion and knowledge, and Buddha Day serves as a moment for Buddhists to reflect on his spiritual legacy of peace, wisdom, and liberation.

Mr. Dutton expresses his gratitude to the more than 615,000 Buddhists in Australia for their significant contributions across various fields. The celebrations of Buddha Day across the nation highlight the achievements of modern Australia: a diverse society united by common values and traditions.

Despite the differences among Australians, there are fundamental values that bind everyone together. The love for family, appreciation for friends, commitment to community, sense of duty, aspiration and optimism, respect for law and liberty, pride in the country, and dedication to protecting democracy drive Australians to contribute to something greater than themselves.

Mr. Dutton wishes all a peaceful and joyful Buddha Day.
