Celebrating 30 Years of Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara: A Beacon of Buddhist Teaching in Melbourne

Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, also known as Buddhist Vihara Victoria Incorporated (BVV Inc.), stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhist teachings in the heart of Melbourne’s South-Eastern suburbs. Founded by the late Venerable Gangodawila Soma Thero and later dedicated to the Maha Sangha by the Most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayaka Thero, the Vihara has been a beacon of spiritual guidance and community service since its establishment.

Initially named “Buddhist Vihara Victoria” in Noble Park, the Vihara relocated to its current premises in Berwick in 2002, under the vision of Venerable Soma Thero. Renamed as Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, the temple embodies the ideals of Buddhist education, research, information, and cultural exchange. Despite the untimely passing of Venerable Soma Thero, the current Chief Incumbent, Venerable Digamadulle Wimalananda Thero, continues to uphold the Vihara’s mission with unwavering dedication and virtuous conduct.

The Vihara’s outreach extends beyond the Buddhist community, welcoming individuals from all walks of life to learn and practice the teachings of Lord Buddha. Through daily, weekly, monthly, and annual programs, the Vihara offers a sanctuary for those seeking inner peace and enlightenment. From Dhamma sermons to meditation retreats, the Vihara provides a holistic approach to spiritual development and well-being.

Key annual events such as Vesak celebrations and the Katina Ceremony serve as reminders of the profound significance of Buddhist traditions. Vesak, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Lord Buddha, is observed with reverence and joy, fostering a sense of unity and compassion within the community.

Under the guidance of Chief Incumbent Thero and the resident monks, the Vihara also engages in charitable activities, offering blessings, prayers, and counseling to those in need. Moreover, the Vihara actively promotes Sri Lankan cultural heritage through annual events, strengthening bonds within the multicultural fabric of Melbourne.

As the Vihara marks its 30th anniversary, it embarks on new projects aimed at enhancing its facilities and services. From securing the premises with modern fencing to improving stormwater drainage and landscaping, the Vihara invites support from the community to ensure the realization of these endeavors. Donations to the Building Fund are not only tax-deductible but also contribute to the continued growth and sustainability of the Vihara’s mission.

In commemorating three decades of spiritual guidance and community service, Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara reaffirms its commitment to spreading the timeless wisdom of Buddhism and fostering harmony and compassion in society.
