His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, left Sri Lanka this morning (23 April) for the Vatican to attend the funeral of the late Pope Francis.
Cardinal Ranjith boarded his flight from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake at 9:30 a.m. to join global Catholic leaders in paying their final respects.
Pope Francis, who made history as the first Latin American Pope, passed away on Monday (April 21) at the age of 88 following a stroke. His death came less than a month after being discharged from hospital, where he had spent five weeks battling double pneumonia.
The funeral service is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 26 April at 10:00 a.m. in the iconic square in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The event is expected to draw thousands of mourners from around the world, including heads of state, religious figures, and members of the Catholic faithful.
