Hirushika’s journey into photography began at a young age, inspired by his father’s collection of cameras and video equipment. His early exposure laid the foundation for his innate understanding of photography techniques, setting him on a path to pursue his passion professionally.
After relocating to Australia in the early 2000s and pursuing higher education at Melbourne University, Hirushika’s passion for photography continued to blossom. Armed with a DSLR camera, he started capturing moments within the Sri Lankan community, documenting events and gatherings with precision and creativity.
A pivotal moment came in 2005 when Hirushika covered a Baila night event hosted by the Sri Lankan student association at Swinburne University. As one of the first photographers to capture such events in Melbourne, his work garnered attention and praise, establishing him as a trailblazer in event photography.
The turning point in his career came with the encouragement of Mr. Virosh Perera, who recognized Hirushika’s talent and pushed him to pursue photography on a professional scale. Embracing the challenge, Hirushika joined Serendib News and successfully covered his first major event, a tribute party to cricket legend Muttiah Muralidaran.
From that moment on, Hirushika’s confidence soared, and he ventured into covering larger events featuring renowned artists such as Marians and Gypsies. With each assignment, he honed his skills, delivering exceptional results and solidifying his reputation as a top-tier photographer.
Even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hirushika remained steadfast in his dedication to his craft. Despite initial setbacks, he adapted to the new landscape, finding innovative ways to continue serving his clients while upholding the highest standards of quality and professionalism.
