A 37-year-old Canadian woman was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday morning for attempting to smuggle hashish worth Rs. 181 million into the country, Sri Lanka Customs Additional Director General and Media Spokesman Sivali Arukgoda said.
The woman had arrived from Montreal, Canada via Doha on Qatar Airways flight QR 662.
Customs officers conducting a routine inspection discovered 18,123 grams of hashish concealed in her baggage.
The Narcotics Control Unit of the Sri Lanka Customs Department is conducting initial investigations, while the suspect and the seized narcotics will be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigation and legal proceedings.
