Canadian Prime Minister Begins Crucial Diplomatic Trip to India

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India on Friday, launching a high-profile visit aimed at rebuilding strained bilateral relations and significantly expanding trade ties. The trip is also part of a broader strategy to diversify Canada’s economic partnerships amid ongoing tensions with the United States.

Carney touched down in Mumbai, where he is scheduled to engage with business leaders before travelling to New Delhi. His visit will conclude on Monday with talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Carney’s office, discussions will centre on forging ambitious new partnerships in trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, defence, talent mobility, and cultural exchange.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply in 2023 after Canadian authorities accused India of involvement in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. The previous government under Justin Trudeau also alleged a broader campaign of intimidation targeting Sikh activists across Canada.

New Delhi has consistently rejected the accusations, and the dispute led to a severe diplomatic breakdown, including the expulsion of senior diplomats by both sides in 2024. However, relations began to stabilise after Carney assumed office in March 2025, with diplomatic envoys subsequently reinstated.

Following his India visit, Carney is scheduled to travel to Australia and Japan, underscoring Canada’s wider effort to reduce dependence on its southern neighbour and strengthen ties across the Indo-Pacific region.
