Canada has strengthened its support for Ukraine with a new funding package for critical military equipment, Defence Minister David J. McGuinty announced today. The government will contribute CAD $200 million toward a new set of urgently needed military capabilities sourced from the United States under NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.
The full PURL package, valued at USD $500 million, includes technologies and equipment specifically requested by Ukraine to reinforce its defence against Russia’s ongoing invasion. These items include air defence systems, ammunition, and other essential military capabilities that the U.S. can supply at scale.
Launched in August 2025, the PURL initiative is designed to fast-track Ukraine’s most pressing defence needs by coordinating contributions from NATO Allies. Canada highlighted the importance of the multinational effort and signaled its continued commitment to evaluating further support.
Today’s announcement follows Prime Minister Mark Carney’s earlier decision to fully fund a previous PURL package, bringing Canada’s total contributions to PURL to approximately CAD $892 million.
Since February 2022, Canada has provided more than $6.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine and $22 billion in total support, underscoring its long-term pledge to stand with Ukraine against Russian aggression.
