Sri Lanka has taken another major step toward its renewable energy goals, with the Cabinet approving the construction of two new 50-megawatt wind power plants in Mullikulum, Mannar. The move aligns with the government’s plan to generate 70% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
This approval follows a Cabinet decision made on 10 February 2025 to invite proposals from private-sector developers for the 100MW Mullikulum Wind Power Park under a Build–Own–Operate model with a 20-year monitoring period. The international competitive bidding process attracted seven proposals from interested developers.
After thorough evaluation and based on the recommendations of the Cabinet-appointed negotiation committee, the government has awarded the contracts to two developers:
A consortium between Vidullanka PLC and David Pieris Motor Company (Lanka) Ltd
WindForce PLC
Once completed, the two 50MW plants are expected to significantly strengthen Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity, supporting long-term sustainability, energy security, and economic resilience.
