Brain Drain of Medical Professionals Hits Sri Lanka’s Health Sector Hard

Sri Lanka’s healthcare system is reeling from a critical blow as over 1700 doctors and medical specialists have fled the country in the past two years, exacerbating existing challenges and straining hospital operations nationwide.

In a significant setback for Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector, more than 1700 doctors, specialists, and medical professionals have left the island over the last two years. Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, spokesperson for the Government Medical Officers’ Association, attributes this exodus to the country’s ongoing crisis and economic hardships. The departure of these professionals has disrupted the functioning of hospitals, both large and small, across Sri Lanka.
