With just a week to go before the U.S. election, Joe Biden’s recent comment labelling some supporters of Donald Trump as “garbage” has caused turmoil in Kamala Harris’s campaign. The comment, which Biden made during a virtual event with the Latino community, has drawn criticism and sparked a wave of political analysis.
Republican pollster Frank Luntz described Biden’s remark as a potential “turning point,” reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables” comment in 2016. Luntz believes Biden’s words could increase turnout for Trump, particularly among undecided voters, and expects Republicans to capitalize on the statement with immediate advertising efforts.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Republican governor and Hollywood icon, also made headlines, publicly endorsing Harris. He voiced frustration with Trump’s leadership, calling him “un-American” and declaring his support for “a new generation of leadership.”
While Biden and Harris have attempted to clarify and distance themselves from the remark, Republican critics, including Trump, have seized the opportunity to rally support, emphasizing a message of patriotism and unity. Harris, in response, reiterated her stance of representing all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
