“Bhatiya,” a majestic tusker known as the last of his kind roaming the forests between Nikaweratiya and Ambanpola, has fallen critically ill and is receiving urgent care from wildlife veterinary teams based in Maho.
The tusker initially suffered a disorder in his front left limb, and while treatment showed some signs of recovery, he later collapsed in the muddy waters of the Polpithigama tank reservation — where he now lies, unable to stand.
According to wildlife officers, Bhatiya is in serious condition, with severe swelling and difficulty feeding. Despite the challenging conditions, veterinary surgeons and forest officials are doing everything possible to save his life.
Maho Divisional Secretary B.M. Nadun R. Sampath confirmed that a dedicated team continues to monitor and treat the iconic elephant around the clock.
Range Forest Assistant Jayasundara noted with concern that the tusker’s condition has made treatment extremely difficult, but the team remains hopeful and committed.
