The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed serious concern over recent incidents where individuals have threatened legal action or complaints against Attorneys-at-Law for work carried out on behalf of their clients.
In an official statement, the BASL underscored the independent role of attorneys, highlighting that their professional duty is to represent the rights and interests of clients within the framework of the law.
The association reaffirmed the long-standing principle that lawyers must be allowed to discharge their duties fearlessly and independently, in the best interests of their clients.
While noting that Sri Lanka’s legal system already has proper mechanisms to review and supervise attorney conduct, the BASL referred to the Supreme Court judgment in Supreme Contempt Application No. 3/2016 (July 15, 2021). In that case, the Court convicted and sentenced an individual for making false representations against an attorney, stressing that such actions undermine the administration of justice.
The BASL called on all stakeholders to act with restraint, accountability, and responsibility, warning that attempts to intimidate or unfairly target legal professionals will not be tolerated.
The statement was issued by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
