Australians Return Home as Middle East Conflict Escalates

More than 900 Australians have been assisted in fleeing Lebanon as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies, with Israel ramping up its bombing campaign against Hezbollah on the anniversary of Hamas’ attack.

The Australian government has urged its citizens and permanent residents in Lebanon to leave the region before the situation worsens further.

Flights carrying Australians and their families have already started landing, with a scheduled arrival in Sydney from Cyprus on Monday night (AEDT).

Additionally, two more flights are set to depart from Beirut, including a Qantas flight on Tuesday, bringing up to 220 more passengers back to Australia.

Medical personnel will be on board to provide assistance, and Australian Red Cross teams will meet passengers in Sydney, offering psychological first aid.

The Australian government, led by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, is working to secure more seats on commercial flights for those registered to leave Lebanon, though these flights are subject to security and operational restrictions.

The escalation comes on the anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel, which has triggered the heaviest bombardments of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, in the conflict’s latest chapter.

As Israel intensifies its efforts against Iran-backed Hezbollah, concerns for the safety of Australians in the region continue to grow.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese marked the anniversary by mourning the loss of innocent lives and reiterating that there is no place for hatred in Australia.
