From Wednesday, June 18 to Tuesday, June 24, Australia will experience its darkest week of the year, centered around the winter solstice on Saturday, June 21. This marks the shortest day and longest night of 2025 for the Southern Hemisphere.
The winter solstice occurs when the Earth’s Southern Hemisphere reaches its furthest tilt away from the Sun, causing the sun to sit lowest in the sky and delivering the least daylight.
All major cities in Australia will see their briefest sunlight hours this week. But after June 21, the days will gradually begin to get longer, leading toward the summer solstice in December.
Though cold and dim, the solstice also signals a turning point—longer, sunnier days are on the way.
