Australia and Bangladesh Unite to Combat Gender-Based Violence

Australia reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and addressing gender-based violence in a significant collaboration with Bangladesh during the global commencement of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The event highlighted the shared dedication of both nations to creating safer, more equitable communities for women and children.

Detective Superintendent Matt Craft and Detective Sergeant Scott Dixon from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) traveled to Dhaka last week to engage with the Bangladesh Police as part of inquiries into the unconfirmed death of a Bangladeshi-Australian woman. These discussions demonstrated a spirit of collaboration, made even more meaningful by the recent renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding on police cooperation between the two countries.

“We had productive meetings with the Bangladesh Police, and I am very pleased with the level of engagement,” Detective Superintendent Craft shared. “This partnership is critical as we work together to address shared challenges and strengthen justice systems in both nations.”

The visit coincided with the launch of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, underscoring Australia’s alignment with global and local efforts to tackle this critical issue. At the launch event, Acting Australian High Commissioner Nardia Simpson joined Detective Superintendent Craft and Detective Sergeant Dixon in meeting prominent leaders, including Sharmeen S Murshid, Hon’ble Adviser, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, and Mamtaz Ahmed NDC, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.

“It was an honour to meet Adviser Murshid and Senior Secretary Ahmed,” Acting High Commissioner Simpson remarked. “Their insights and leadership highlight the critical work Bangladesh is doing to combat gender-based violence. Together, we explored avenues for greater cooperation to ensure our combined efforts make a meaningful difference in the lives of women and children.”

The ongoing collaboration between Australia and Bangladesh is a testament to their shared vision of a world where everyone can live free from violence and discrimination. This partnership extends beyond dialogue, focusing on impactful actions to address the root causes of gender-based violence and promote gender equality.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign serves as a powerful reminder that change is possible when nations unite to champion the rights and safety of the most vulnerable. Australia and Bangladesh stand as global allies, working tirelessly to make this vision a reality.
