Cargills Bank PLC has announced the appointment of Asoka Pieris as its new Chairman, effective July 3, 2024. Pieris will succeed Richard Ebell, who will retire on July 2, 2024, in accordance with the Banking Act on Corporate Governance for licensed commercial banks issued by the Monetary Board of the Central Bank. Ebell has served on the Cargills Bank board since his appointment in 2015, completing a notable nine-year tenure.
Pieris joined the Board of Directors of Cargills Bank PLC on January 20, 2023, as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director. His leadership potential was quickly recognized, leading to his appointment as Deputy Chairman on April 1, 2024. He has been actively involved in various Board Sub Committees, including the Board Nominations and Governance Committee, Board Human Resources and Remuneration Committee, Board Strategic Planning Committee, and Board Credit Committee.
With a distinguished career spanning finance, marketing, and manufacturing, Pieris brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cargills (Ceylon) PLC and is the Managing Director of Cargills Retail (Private) Limited. His extensive professional background includes significant roles within the Singer Group of companies, where he held positions such as CEO and CFO of Singer Group in Sri Lanka, CFO of Singer Asia, and Director of the group’s public companies in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Pieris’s expertise extends into the financial sector, having previously held board positions in several companies. He is an Associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK, and a Certified Global Management Accountant.
The appointment of Asoka Pieris as Chairman marks a significant leadership transition for Cargills Bank, as the institution looks to leverage his extensive experience and strategic vision to continue its growth and success in the banking sector.
