Elections Canada has confirmed that just over 200 ballots were rejected in the recent Alberta byelection, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre secured a decisive victory and regained his seat in the House of Commons.
According to the validated results of the Battle River—Crowfoot byelection, a total of 211 ballots were rejected, while 51,085 valid votes were counted.
This byelection marked a historic first, as voters were required to write the name of their chosen candidate on a blank ballot, with candidate booklets provided at polling stations.
Elections Canada spokesperson Matthew McKenna explained that ballots were counted as long as the voter’s intention was clear. Minor typos did not invalidate ballots, but if a name was missing or referred to someone not contesting in the riding, the vote was rejected.
Despite the ballot rejections, Poilievre won a landslide victory with more than 80% of the vote, securing 41,308 votes.
