Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Angelo Mathews has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the international community for the relief assistance extended to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, which left more than 2.1 million people affected, caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure, and claimed over 600 lives.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mathews — who has captained Sri Lanka in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is — praised the scale of support being provided both locally and internationally.
“The amount of help and effort Sri Lanka is receiving to rebuild is so heart‑warming to see. Not only locally but internationally! From air support to food to everything else! Thank you so much everyone! We appreciate it so very much!” Mathews wrote.
Sri Lanka has received assistance from several countries, including India, USA, China, South Korea, Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, UAE, Australia, and the UK.
India has been particularly active through Operation Sagar Bandhu, deploying military personnel, rescue teams, and engineers to assist Sri Lanka, while also sending naval ships loaded with rations and relief supplies.
Other nations such as Pakistan, UAE, and the USA have dispatched teams to aid in rescue operations and rebuilding efforts, alongside consignments of food, medical supplies, and financial support.
Mathews’ message reflects the gratitude felt across Sri Lanka as the country continues to recover from one of its worst natural disasters in recent history.
