American tourist’s TikTok review of ‘terrible’ food in UK goes viral

An American woman’s almost three-minute video about how “terrible” British food is has gone viral.

The review shared by Charlie, who is from the South and now lives in New Jersey, on TikTok has been viewed over a million times so far this month and has sparked an intense war of words between social media users.

“I had a variety of food while I was there. I was shown around by natives so for all you Brits out there I did go to Wetherspoons, I did go to Toby’s,” she said.

“I did have a proper Chinese,” she added in a fake British accent. “All terrible.”

Charlie said Wetherspoons, a well-known chain of pubs in the UK, was like the British version of American restaurant chain Chilli’s or Applebee’s. She said Toby Carvery was like the Golden Corral, an American buffet chain.

“If you’ve ever been to a Brazilian steakhouse in the United States – doesn’t compare, a Toby’s could never touch it,” she said.

“I know that a Toby’s is like bare minimum for a carvery but like British people say we don’t have carveries but we literally do, they’re just not called that. And they’re better, probably than anything they could ever imagine.”

Charlie described Nando’s, also in the UK and Australia, as a “mild version” of Chipotle.

She said it was “really nothing great” but it was “the only thing I could eat consistently in the UK”.

“Everything else was a f***ing gamble,” she said. “Ya’ll do not use seasonings.”

Finishing off her video, she criticised the Chinese food available. She tried it in Bath, England.

“Not even the worst Chinese food I’ve had in America could compare to the awfulness,” she said.

Many other American travellers were on Charlie’s side, voicing their disgust about the lack of flavoursome food in the comments.

“I feel so seen right now. Best meal of my LIFE was McDonald’s on the car ride home from the airport after a week over there. I was STARVED the whole time,” one American said.

“Nando’s was by far the most tolerable. I had to get the extra hot but it was decent … that was the most flavour I got the whole visit,” wrote another.

“Desserts tend to be solid but it feels mostly like an apology for the meal you just ate,” penned a third.

A man from Louisiana added: “Our WORST food probably tastes delicious by comparison.”

An American living in Ireland described the food situation as “truly dire”, while another said: “The English mind simply could not comprehend an Outback steakhouse.”

Brits were unsurprisingly not thrilled with the review, claiming Charlie had visited cheap chain venues.

“Toby Carvery and Wetherspoons aren’t supposed to be good … they are just cheap!!!” one wrote.

“Spoons ain’t meant to be special?? It’s dirt cheap, cheaper than Maccies on some meals,” agreed another.

“That’s what you get when you choose cheap, convenient places to eat,” said a third.

Others were much more brutal in their responses.

“An example of a poorly educated, entitled American youth,” wrote one person.

“More British have visited America than Americans have visited the UK … and everyone will tell you food in America is dire,” argued another.

“You’re welcome to your opinion, you tried it and it wasn’t for you but what’s with the disrespect??” said someone else.
