A recent school health survey has revealed alarming mental health trends among Sri Lankan students, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Acting Director of Mental Health Lakmini Nayana Magodaratne stated that 22.4% of children feel lonely, 18% show signs of depression, and 11.9% have trouble sleeping due to worry.
Shockingly, 75% of students said they have no one to confide in.
She emphasised that children are under increasing pressure due to various social factors.
Meanwhile, Consultant Psychiatrist Sajeewana Amarasinghe noted that Sri Lanka reports around eight suicides daily, with approximately 3,500 cases per year.
He added that while media coverage of suicides has reduced, the overall rate has remained steady in recent years.
