Air India Flight from Kochi Skids Off Runway in Mumbai Amid Heavy Rain; DGCA Investigates

An Air India Airbus A320 flight from Kochi to Mumbai experienced a runway excursion while landing at Mumbai airport on the morning of July 21, 2025, amid heavy rainfall. The aircraft veered off the primary runway at 9:27 a.m., prompting Mumbai International Airport Limited to close the main runway and open an alternative one.

The incident caused visible damage to the plane, including dents to the engine cowling and trailing edge of a wing flap, along with grass and mud marks on the wing and nose wheel areas. Despite this, the aircraft safely taxied to the gate, and all passengers and crew disembarked without injury, according to Air India’s official statement.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has dispatched a team to Mumbai to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mumbai airport has witnessed similar weather-related runway incidents in the past. In September 2023, a Learjet 45 business jet skidded off the runway onto the grass during landing, and in July 2019, a SpiceJet Boeing 737 overshot the runway, causing a two-day closure of the primary runway.

Following these events, the aviation regulator issued guidelines requiring airlines to deploy well-trained crews, conduct thorough risk assessments, and be aware of aircraft limitations during adverse weather takeoff and landing operations.
