Air Canada flight attendants are staging pickets at major airports across Canada today in what their union has dubbed a national day of action.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) confirmed demonstrations are taking place at 1 p.m. ET at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, and Calgary International Airport.
The move comes as the Air Canada component of CUPE resumes bargaining talks with the airline on Friday. The talks follow a strike mandate vote in which 99.7% of members supported potential job action.
The vote concluded last Tuesday, meaning flight attendants could legally strike as early as August 16 at 12:01 a.m., provided 72 hours’ notice is given.
In a statement last week, Air Canada expressed optimism that an agreement could still be reached, emphasizing that there remains enough time to avoid travel disruptions for thousands of passengers.
