A young man has died after vanishing in an ACT river on Thursday, causing a search and rescue operation that ended with grim results.
The 23 year-old man had gone into the waters of the Murrumbidgee River near the Uriarra Crossing bridge, a half-hour’s drive from Canberra.
Police and emergency services responded to a report of the incident about 5.40pm, beginning a search for the man in the waters.
The man’s body was found in the water about 8.35pm.
Witnesses have spoken to police over the incident, but they are urging others to contact them for additional information.
Uriarra Crossing is close to the NSW/ACT border, contains several picnic sites, and is a popular location for birdwatchers.
Murrumbidgee River stretches into both states and often experiences flooding, with a flood watch having been issued along the river as recently as February 4.
