About Mrs. Uthra Vijay and Keerthana School of Music

Mrs. Uthra Vijay, the Artistic Director of the Keerthana School of Music, founded the institution in Melbourne in 2003. A versatile artist, composer, and educator, Uthra has built a formidable reputation in both classical and contemporary music circles. Her extensive training in Carnatic music began at the age of five, under the guidance of distinguished gurus, including S.P. Ramh from the legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman’s School of Music.

Uthra’s musical journey includes numerous prestigious performances across India and Australia. In South India, she has performed at venues such as The Rasika Ranjani Sabha, Karaikudi Kamban Vizha, and Ramakrishna Mutt. In Australia, she has showcased her talent at the Carnatic Music Circle, Laya Vidya Centre, and Indian Music Academy of Melbourne, among others. Her leadership has been instrumental in organizing 11 annual concerts for the Keerthana School of Music.

Beyond traditional music, Uthra has explored contemporary and intercultural musical collaborations. Notable projects include performances with Dr. Priya Srinivasan at the Mapping Melbourne Festival, Jaipur Literary Festival in Melbourne, and the Triennial International Asian Festival AsiaTOPA. She has also worked with international artists like Iranian singer Tabassom Ostad and Yiddish singer Inge Mandos, presenting innovative works at the Showroom Gallery in London and the Berlin Wall Memorial.

As a prominent figure in Melbourne’s Indian migrant community, Uthra recently completed her term as the Secretary of the Federation of Indian Music and Dance Association of Victoria. Her dedication to music transcends performance; she aims to unify and enrich communities through the power of music.

Join ABBS and the Keerthana School of Music for a spiritually uplifting evening filled with enchanting Bhajans, fostering unity and cultural appreciation within the community.
