Former India captain Rohit Sharma has linked up with the Mumbai Indians squad as preparations intensify for the 2026 Indian Premier League season.
The team began its pre-season camp in Mumbai on Monday ahead of the tournament’s 19th edition, which is scheduled to get underway on March 28. A group of players, including Shardul Thakur, Mayank Markande, Allah Ghazanfar, and several emerging talents, were among the early arrivals for training. Rohit joined the camp a day later, appearing relaxed as he reunited with head coach Mahela Jayawardene and caught up with former India teammate Thakur before heading into practice.
One of the most decorated players in IPL history, Rohit has won six titles including five as captain of Mumbai Indians and one with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. Since joining the franchise in 2011, he took over leadership duties in 2013 and guided the team to their first-ever title that same season. He remained captain for over a decade before Hardik Pandya assumed the role ahead of the 2024 season.
Rohit also stands as Mumbai Indians’ all-time leading run-scorer and is among a select group of players to surpass 6,000 runs in the IPL. His standout campaign came in 2013, when he amassed 538 runs during a title-winning season.
In 2015, he played a pivotal role in the final against the Chennai Super Kings, earning Player of the Match honors as Mumbai secured their second championship. Under his leadership, the franchise added further titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020.
Jayawardene highlighted the importance of a strong start to the pre-season, noting that the opening day sets the tone for the entire campaign. He emphasized the blend of experienced players familiar with the franchise and new additions, adding that the initial sessions are crucial in building momentum and focus for the season ahead.
