Netflix has confirmed that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is in development, following the film’s massive success as the platform’s most-watched movie ever.
The streaming service has not yet revealed a release date. The follow-up project will be the first produced under a new exclusive multi-year agreement between Netflix and the film’s co-directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
News of the sequel arrives as industry observers predict strong awards momentum for the original film ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. The movie has been nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
Its standout track Golden has already achieved major recognition, winning Best Song Written for Visual Media at the Grammy Awards the first time a K-pop track has claimed that honour.
The original film centres on Rumi, Mira and Zoey, members of the fictional K-pop group Huntr/x, who balance global pop stardom with their hidden identities as demon hunters.
Announcing the sequel on social media, Kang expressed pride in the global response to the story. She said it was especially meaningful as a Korean filmmaker to see audiences embrace the Korean characters and culture portrayed in the film, adding that the creative team has many more ideas to explore within the universe they created.
Singer Ejae, who provided Rumi’s singing voice and co-wrote the hit song Golden, said she hopes the sequel will experiment with new musical influences. Speaking in a recent interview, she said the next film could highlight an even wider range of musical styles from Korea.
Ejae added that the overwhelming reaction to the film and its soundtrack has been difficult to fully process, describing the experience as “crazy” and beyond what she expected.
Music producer Zhun, who worked on Golden, also expressed enthusiasm about building on the energy of the first movie. He said he hopes to further blend music with the film’s strong visual storytelling, which helped create its unique atmosphere.
Netflix has not shared additional plot details or production timelines for the sequel. The original project took roughly seven years to complete, from its initial concept to its eventual release.
Since debuting last summer, KPop Demon Hunters has grown into a global cultural hit—an uncommon achievement for a K-pop-inspired production breaking into mainstream Western markets, including the United States.
Although primarily an English-language film, the production incorporates Korean cultural elements such as language, food and imagery to reflect its South Korean inspiration.
The film has also enjoyed major awards recognition. It won Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards, and is competing for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars alongside films such as Zootopia 2 and Elio.
Earlier this year, Netflix reported that the movie had accumulated more than 480 million views within six months, setting a new viewing record for the platform.
Meanwhile, Golden the soundtrack’s breakout hit climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, further cementing the film’s global impact.
