The government has announced enhanced security measures for lawyers, judges, and investigating officers following concerns raised by the legal community over recent violent incidents.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament that the government will take steps to ensure the safety of lawyers and investigating officers after assessing threats based on intelligence reports. He stated that security has already been provided to judges and officers of the Attorney General’s Department who are considered at risk.
Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Minister emphasized that the recent murder of a lawyer and his wife would not affect the professional duties of the legal fraternity. He reiterated that any lawyer has the constitutional right to appear for any suspect, regardless of the nature of the case.
The Minister described the murder as an isolated incident and assured Parliament that it does not pose a threat to national security. However, investigations are ongoing to determine whether recent shootings are interconnected and if there are any political links.
He also stated that attempts are being made to create public fear by portraying the murder as a major national security crisis. Investigations into the case are continuing, and a statement had reportedly been recorded from the murdered lawyer prior to the shooting.
According to the Minister, 12 police teams, including the CID, STF, CCD, and CIB, are conducting investigations into the case. Two suspects have already been arrested for aiding and abetting the crime, and further arrests are expected as inquiries progress.
He further rejected claims that the shooting occurred in a high-security zone, noting that security forces have confirmed that the area had not been officially designated as such.
