Dual Nationals in the UK Scramble to Renew Passports Amid Rush

Millions of dual nationals around the world are now racing to obtain or renew their British passports following new travel rules introduced by the UK government. The changes, which take effect on February 25, 2026, tighten entry requirements for individuals holding more than one citizenship.

Previously, many British dual nationals could travel to the UK using their other passport — such as those from the US, Canada, Australia, or EU countries — without presenting a British passport. However, under the updated rules, dual citizens must now prove their right to enter the UK using the correct documentation. Those who do not possess a valid British passport, a valid Irish passport, or a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode inserted in their non-British passport will be denied entry.

The new regulations are linked to the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, a digital permit for visa-exempt non-British travellers. British citizens, including those with dual nationality, cannot use an ETA, meaning there is no alternative for those traveling solely on a foreign passport.

The sudden enforcement has created a rush among affected individuals, many of whom were unaware of the changes until checking travel requirements. Airlines, ferries, and train operators will be instructed to deny boarding to passengers who cannot demonstrate they are entitled to enter the UK with the proper documentation.

For some, the situation has revealed that they were British citizens by descent without realizing it, while others had not renewed their UK passports in years. With travel plans pending, there is now a scramble to apply for passports or certificates of entitlement before the new rules come into effect.
