Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) is set to expand to 180,000 square metres by 2031 as Dubai strengthens its position as a global hub for exhibitions, conferences, and business tourism, according to Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).
Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) is advancing a phased expansion of the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC), with plans to increase its capacity to 140,000 square metres by the first quarter of 2026 and reach 180,000 square metres by 2031. Mahir Julfar, Executive Vice President at DWTC, said the expansion aligns with Dubai’s ambition to double the number of events hosted annually by 2033.
The phased development strategy is driven by strong global demand in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, which is projected to grow significantly by 2030. Julfar noted that the expansion is designed to balance immediate capacity needs with long-term growth while maintaining operational resilience.
Major international events such as Gulfood and World Health Expo have already demonstrated the demand for large-scale venues, with co-hosting across multiple locations validating the expansion strategy. Dubai’s role as a global convening hub under its economic agenda continues to accelerate, reinforcing the need for world-class exhibition infrastructure.
Julfar highlighted that DEC’s integration within Expo City Dubai gives it a structural advantage over competing venues in other global cities. The centre operates within a purpose-built ecosystem that includes transport connectivity, hospitality, commercial spaces and residential communities, offering a seamless experience for exhibitors and visitors.
He also emphasised sustainability as a key differentiator, noting that DEC incorporates LEED-certified design principles, energy and water efficiency systems, and sustainable urban infrastructure. Organisers increasingly consider sustainability a decisive factor when selecting host destinations for international events.
In addition, the venue’s advanced transport coordination, technology infrastructure, and placemaking strategy aim to redefine the exhibition experience by blending business, lifestyle, and cultural activities. With interconnected halls capable of hosting multiple events simultaneously, DEC is expected to enable new event formats and industry synergies.
The expansion of DEC is part of Dubai’s broader urban and economic development strategy, supporting its long-term vision to remain a leading global destination for business tourism and innovation-driven exhibitions.
