Sri Lanka has earned international recognition in the culinary world as student chef Rumira Piyasiri won the bronze medal at the 12th Young Chef Olympiad (YCO) 2026, held in India.
Recognised as the world’s largest global culinary competition for student chefs, the Young Chef Olympiad was organised by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM), India, in collaboration with the International Hospitality Council, London. The prestigious event took place in Kolkata from February 1 to 6, bringing together young culinary talents from 50 countries.
Representing Sri Lanka, Rumira Piyasiri impressed the international jury with outstanding skill, creativity, and professionalism, securing a place on the podium and bringing pride to the nation.
Rumira was mentored throughout the competition by Lecturer Emeshika de Silva, who accompanied him to India as his guide and coach.

The bronze medallist returned to Sri Lanka on February 8, arriving at 6.50 a.m. at the Bandaranaike International Airport from New Delhi on Indian Airlines flight AI-277.
A warm welcome awaited Rumira on arrival, with the Principal of the Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management, affiliated to SLIIT, along with administrators, lecturers, and Rumira’s proud parents, gathering at the airport to congratulate the young chef on his remarkable achievement.
Rumira Piyasiri’s success highlights the growing standard of Sri Lankan hospitality and culinary education on the global stage and serves as an inspiration to aspiring young chefs across the country.
