Showers Above 50mm Expected in Several Parts of Sri Lanka Today

The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers exceeding 50mm in several parts of Sri Lanka today (February 7), urging the public to take necessary precautions.

According to the Met Department, showers will occur at times in the Uva Province and in Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Ampara and Batticaloa districts. Meanwhile, several spells of showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district.

Showers or thundershowers may develop in many other areas after 2.00 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall of more than 50mm likely in some places.

Fairly strong winds, reaching 30–40 kmph, can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in Matale, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

Misty conditions are also forecast during the early morning hours in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, and in Galle, Matara and Badulla districts.

The Department of Meteorology has advised the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
