UAE Announces Reduced Working Hours for Public and Private Sectors During Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, working hours for both public and private sector employees in the UAE will be shortened in accordance with national labour regulations.

Ramadan is expected to begin on February 19, prompting organisations across government and private entities to adjust daily schedules to accommodate fasting and altered routines.

Under Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, private sector employees are entitled to a mandatory reduction of two hours per workday during Ramadan. This rule applies to all staff covered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, irrespective of their position or seniority. Employers have the flexibility to implement shift work, staggered schedules, or remote arrangements, provided the daily hour reduction is upheld.

For public sector employees, federal and local authorities typically issue circulars ahead of Ramadan specifying shorter working hours, flexible start and end times, and in some cases, remote work options depending on operational requirements. Certain departments or emirates may further tailor schedules for essential services and customer-facing roles.

Labour guidelines also encourage private companies to adopt flexible arrangements to maintain productivity while supporting employee well-being. Any work performed beyond the shortened schedule must continue to be compensated as overtime.
