147th Royal Thomian Cricket Encounter 2026 Set to Light Up Colombo

The 147th Royal Thomian Cricket Encounter, famously known as the Battle of the Blues, is set to take centre stage from Thursday, March 12 to Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the iconic SSC Cricket Ground, Colombo.

Recognised as the second-longest uninterrupted cricket series in the world, the Royal–Thomian encounter has been played annually since 1879, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured sporting traditions. The match is contested between Royal College, Colombo and St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, two of the country’s most prestigious schools, for the coveted D.S. Senanayake Memorial Shield.

More than just a cricket match, the Battle of the Blues is a celebration of heritage, rivalry, and camaraderie. Over the years, it has grown into a major cultural event, drawing thousands of past pupils, students, and cricket fans from across the country. Traditions such as the vibrant Cycle Parade, colourful flags, school songs, and reunions add to the festive atmosphere surrounding the encounter.

The Royal–Thomian has also played a significant role in shaping Sri Lankan cricket, having produced several national cricketers and unforgettable sporting moments. Despite the intense on-field rivalry, the event continues to symbolise sportsmanship and brotherhood, values that both institutions proudly uphold.

With anticipation already building, the 147th edition promises three days of thrilling cricket, nostalgia, and unmatched school spirit, as Colombo once again turns blue for one of the nation’s most iconic sporting spectacles.
