The life and legacy of Michael Jackson are set to take center stage on the big screen with the release of a new trailer for Michael, the upcoming biographical drama from Lionsgate. The film charts the extraordinary rise of the pop icon, from his childhood stardom with the Jackson 5 to his transformation into one of the most influential entertainers in music history.
The title role is played by Jaafar Jackson, the late singer’s nephew, marking his first major acting appearance. Helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, known for Training Day and The Equalizer, the film is written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan, whose previous work includes Gladiator and Rango.
Fuqua has expressed strong belief in Jaafar’s performance, noting that the portrayal goes far beyond appearance. He has said that Jaafar captures the essence and soul of Michael Jackson in a way that feels authentic and deeply moving, offering audiences an experience that must be seen to be fully appreciated.
The biopic boasts a star-studded supporting cast. Colman Domingo takes on the role of Joe Jackson, while Nia Long portrays Katherine Jackson. Miles Teller appears as longtime attorney and advisor John Branca, and Laura Harrier plays music executive Suzanne de Passe. The ensemble also includes Kat Graham as Diana Ross and Larenz Tate as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.
Several actors portray members of the Jackson family, including Jamal R. Henderson as Jermaine, Tre’ Horton as Marlon, Rhyan Hill as Tito, Joseph David-Jones as Jackie, Jessica Sula as La Toya, and Juliano Valdi as a young Michael during the Jackson 5 era.
According to the official description, Michael offers a cinematic look at the life of one of the world’s most celebrated artists, exploring both his personal journey and his creative evolution. The film promises to showcase key moments behind the scenes as well as recreations of some of Jackson’s most iconic performances, giving viewers an intimate look at the man behind the music.
Produced with the cooperation of the Jackson estate, Michael is a joint production between Lionsgate and GK Films. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 24.
