Carlos Alcaraz delivered a performance for the ages on Sunday, defeating Novak Djokovic in four sets to win the Australian Open and become the youngest man in history to complete the career Grand Slam.
The 22-year-old Spaniard recovered from losing the opening set to record a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 victory in a gripping final at Rod Laver Arena, denying the 24-time major champion a chance to claim a record 25th Grand Slam title.
With the Australian Open crown now added to his French Open, Wimbledon and US Open triumphs, Alcaraz also moved to seven major titles overall, underlining his status as the dominant force of a new generation.
“I was nervous, my legs were shaking, but this means the world to me,” Alcaraz said after sealing his maiden Melbourne title.
Djokovic, gracious in defeat, congratulated the young champion in what felt like a symbolic passing-of-the-torch moment in men’s tennis.
