Australia Records First 50°C Temperatures in Four Years

Australia has recorded its first 50°C temperatures in four years, as an intense heatwave continues to affect large parts of the country. Two locations in South Australia — Andamooka and Port Augusta — reached 50°C within the past two days, marking new temperature records for both areas.

According to meteorologists, the extreme heat is being caused by a “heat dome”, where a slow-moving high-pressure system traps hot air over southern and southeastern Australia. As the air sinks, it heats further through a process known as subsidence warming, resulting in dangerously high temperatures that last for several days.

Record-Breaking Heat in South Australia

Andamooka, a remote town near Roxby Downs, recorded a maximum temperature of 50.0°C on Thursday, followed by Port Augusta reaching the same temperature on Friday. These are the highest temperatures ever recorded at these locations.

Prior to this week, South Australia had only experienced 50°C temperatures twice, both in 1960 at Oodnadatta. Nationally, these readings represent the 8th and 9th occasions that Australia has officially recorded temperatures of 50°C.

The last time such extreme heat was observed in Australia was in 2022, when parts of Western Australia crossed the 50°C threshold.

Extreme Heat Across Multiple States

While only two locations officially reached 50°C, several areas across South Australia and New South Wales experienced temperatures above 49°C. Over a five-day period, at least 12 weather stations recorded extreme heat, indicating the widespread impact of the ongoing heatwave. Experts believe some regions may have exceeded 50°C in areas without official monitoring stations.

How Temperatures Are Officially Measured

Australia’s official temperatures are measured using thermometers placed inside Stevenson Screens, which protect instruments from direct sunlight and rain while allowing proper airflow. These screens are positioned over grass, away from buildings and heat-reflecting surfaces, ensuring accurate and internationally consistent readings.
