Final preparations are underway for Sri Lanka’s 78th National Independence Day, scheduled for February 4, 2026, at Independence Square in Colombo. The celebrations will follow the theme “Let’s Build Sri Lanka”, emphasizing national unity and progress.
In preparation for the event, the Sri Lanka Police have announced a special traffic plan in Colombo to manage rehearsals and the main festivities while ensuring smooth vehicular movement.
Rehearsals are scheduled for January 30, January 31, and February 2, with traffic restrictions in place around Independence Square from 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On February 1, restrictions will run from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., while on the day of the Independence Day ceremony (February 4), traffic controls will begin at 5:00 a.m. and remain until the conclusion of the event.
Key roads affected include Janadhipathi Mawatha, Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Lotus Road, and Gregory’s Road, and motorists are advised to use alternative routes such as D.R.
