Colombo Police Announce Traffic Arrangements for Navam Perahera

Sri Lanka Police have introduced special traffic arrangements in Colombo in view of the annual Navam Maha Perahera of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, with road closures and diversions planned for the evenings of January 31 and February 1.

Police said the temporary traffic scheme will operate from 6.30 p.m. onwards on both days to ensure the smooth conduct of the religious procession, which traditionally attracts large numbers of devotees and spectators.

According to the Police Media Division, the Perahera will gather along W.A.D. Ramanayake Mawatha, Park Street and Jinarathana Mawatha before beginning its journey from Jinarathana Mawatha near the temple. The procession is scheduled to pass through Hunupitiya Wewa Road, W.A.D. Ramanayake Mawatha, Sir James Peiris Mawatha, Altair Avenue, Staple Street and Baybrook Place, and will conclude at the Gangaramaya Temple.

During the procession, several roads and junctions along the route will be temporarily closed or subject to restricted access. These include the W.A.D. Ramanayake Mawatha–Hunupitiya Wewa Road Junction, Dharmapala Mawatha–Park Street Junction and the Union Place–Hyde Park Corner Junction, among others.

Motorists travelling along Sir James Peiris Mawatha have been advised to use alternative routes such as Union Place, Nawam Mawatha, Uththarananda Mawatha and Dharmapala Mawatha to avoid delays.

Police added that diversions will be implemented only within areas directly affected by the Perahera, while traffic will continue to flow normally in other parts of the city. The public is requested to cooperate with law enforcement officers and adhere to the designated traffic arrangements to reduce inconvenience.
