Volkswagen is recalling over 44,000 ID.4 electric vehicles in the U.S. and nearly 9,000 in Canada due to potential battery fire risks.
The first recall affects 43,881 2023–2025 ID.4s in the U.S. and 8,526 in Canada. Officials say the high-voltage battery could overheat, increasing fire risk. Owners will be contacted by mail and asked to visit dealerships, where software updates will be applied and batteries replaced if necessary, free of charge.
A smaller recall covers 670 ID.4 SUVs in the U.S. and 136 in Canada. Misaligned battery cell modules could spark a fire even when the vehicle is off. Owners are advised to avoid Level 3 charging, limit charging to 80%, and park outdoors away from structures until the issue is resolved. Volkswagen will notify affected owners and replace the modules as soon as they become available, though some vehicles may remain at dealerships for a period.
Transport Canada lists this recall under number 2026-018.
