Meta is preparing to test paid subscription options across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp as it looks to expand its range of premium digital services.
The subscriptions are expected to unlock extra features, including enhanced artificial intelligence tools, while the basic versions of the platforms will remain free for users.
Meta also plans to experiment with paid access to certain products such as its Vibes video creation app, which uses AI to generate visuals and bring creative ideas to life. The app was introduced last September as part of the latest update to Meta AI.
Reports say Meta intends to integrate technology from Manus, an AI company it acquired in December for about $2 billion, into its subscription offerings, while continuing to sell Manus services separately to businesses.
Manus, now based in Singapore, promotes its technology as capable of operating autonomously, handling complex tasks such as planning and content creation with minimal user input.
Meta has previously tested other paid features, including limits on link-sharing without a subscription and the introduction of a paid verification service in 2023 that provides a blue checkmark on Facebook and Instagram.
The company’s latest move signals a broader push toward blending free social platforms with optional paid upgrades powered by advanced AI.
