A privately owned business jet with eight people on board crashed while taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine on Sunday night, according to reports citing officials familiar with the preliminary details.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were any injuries or fatalities, and the condition of those on board remains unclear.
The aircraft has been identified as a Bombardier Challenger 650, based on early information provided to media outlets. Bangor airport officials said emergency responders were dispatched at about 7:45 p.m. local time after receiving reports of an aircraft incident, and the airport was subsequently shut down.
The accident occurred as a powerful winter storm system moved through parts of the northeastern United States. At the time, Maine was experiencing subfreezing temperatures, light snow and reduced visibility.
Federal aviation records indicate the jet is registered to a limited liability company headquartered in Houston. The aircraft had flown to Maine from Texas earlier, according to a government source. The registered company reportedly shares an address with a Houston-based personal injury law firm.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it will lead an investigation into the crash, working alongside the National Transportation Safety Board.
