US President Donald Trump has warned that Canada could face sweeping 100% tariffs on its exports to the United States if it moves ahead with any trade agreement with China.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that should Canada strike a deal with Beijing, all Canadian goods entering the US would be immediately subjected to a 100% tariff. However, he did not specify which potential agreement he was referring to.
The warning follows last week’s announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of a new “strategic partnership” with China, which included steps to ease certain tariffs. At the time, Trump appeared to welcome the development, calling it “a good thing.”
Relations between Washington and Ottawa have since cooled, particularly after Carney told an audience in Davos that the US-led global order had been disrupted and urged so-called middle powers to cooperate against economic pressure from larger nations.
Trump responded by asserting that Canada’s economy depends heavily on the United States and later withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his proposed Board of Peace.
Doubling down on his stance, Trump said Canada would not be allowed to serve as a gateway for Chinese goods entering the US market.
Canada’s US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc rejected claims of a free trade push with China, stressing that discussions were focused on resolving specific tariff issues rather than negotiating a broad trade deal. He added that Canada remains committed to strengthening its economy and expanding trade ties with partners around the world.
Canada has been exploring ways to reduce its reliance on the US market amid uncertainty over American tariff policies.
