Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya returned to Sri Lanka this morning (23) after attending the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, Switzerland, where she engaged in a series of high-level discussions aimed at advancing the country’s economic and development priorities.
The forum, held from January 19 to 22, provided a platform for the Prime Minister to meet with global political leaders, heads of international financial institutions and senior business executives, focusing on pathways to strengthen Sri Lanka’s long-term economic stability and growth. She was accompanied by a senior delegation that included Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando.
Among the key engagements were bilateral talks with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and Asian Development Bank President Masato Kanda, during which discussions centred on international assistance and policy cooperation needed to support Sri Lanka’s financial resilience. The Prime Minister also held meetings with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo, further strengthening diplomatic ties and reinforcing international confidence in Sri Lanka.
Highlighting Sri Lanka’s policy perspectives, Dr. Amarasuriya delivered a keynote address at the World Women Davos Agenda 2026 and participated in panel discussions addressing employment challenges in emerging economies and the future of global skills development. She also joined a high-level dialogue at the Global Tourism Forum, promoting Sri Lanka as an attractive destination.
In efforts to expand investment opportunities, the Prime Minister met with leaders of multinational firms, including AP Moller-Maersk, engaged with members of the Swiss business community, and visited vocational training institutes in Switzerland to observe best practices. She also interacted with Sri Lankan entrepreneurs based in Switzerland, encouraging their involvement in the country’s development initiatives.
